Researchers from Iran were curious to see the effect of this great ancient spice on the blood fat level and on the body composition. By random choice assigned 88 women that suffer from obese or overweight.

The two groups had reduced calorie diet and attended to nutrition counseling. The difference between the groups was: first group ate yogurt with 3 grams cumin (twice a day) and the second group ate plain yogurt.

Results were published in Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice journal.

They were really interesting: after 3 months, participants of first group lost almost 50 % more weight than the second group. Also, their body fat decreased for 14, 64 %.

First group (the cumin group)substantially lowered the body mass index and their waist circumference.

Another good thing is the reduced blood lipid level. More precisely triglycerides dropped for 23 % at the cumin group, and only 5 % at the second group.

Cumin contains over 100 different chemicals, such as essential fatty acids, volatile oils and phytosterols.

Cumin originates from Egypt but also is cultivated in India, Middle East, Mediterranean countries and China.

Cumin belongs to the same plant family as parsley, dill and caraway.

As a mixture it is contained in curry powder blends, popular Indian and Middle Eastern cuisines and also found in Mexican chili.

Cumin is a spice that have many health benefits. For example, an animal study showed that cumin seeds inhibited loss of bone density and strength.

In traditional medicine, it is used for diseases at digestive system. Cumin also lowers blood sugar in combination with the drug glibenclamide (glyburide). This mix also reduces cholesterol, inflammation, triglycerides, free fatty acids, and blood glucose.

This spice also have anti – cancer effects, it inhibits cervical and colon cancer.

There are many combinations that you can make with cumin:

Add cumin to soups, stews, chili, rice, beans, or lentils. Add some cumin on vegetable sautés.  You can use cumin with sweet potatoes,cauliflower, squash and carrots. Also it is tasty with marinades, salad dressings and mayonnaise.

Anothercombination of cumin is with meat, when you make meatballs, meatloaf or hamburgers. Before cooking add cumin into scrambled eggs
